Stained glass window, 27' x 7.5.' Sacred Heart College, Taravao, Tahiti, May, 2014
TAHITI ADVENTURE
Ancient Arts owner Mark Schoem was able to fulfill a childhood dream of a visit to Tahiti when the studio was commissioned for a stained glass project at the Sacred Heart College in Taravao (Lycee Sacre-Coeur de Taravao). The background of the window depicts the landscape of Tahiti and some of the activities of the people as viewed from the plateau of Taravao.
This beautiful landscape of mountains and ocean is situated at the isthmus that joins the two sections of the island, Tahiti Nui and Tahiti Iti. The central figures of the window are Fr. Jean-Marie de la Mennais (d. 1860) of the Brothers of Christian Instruction (Frere de la Instruction Christian) who sent the first Catholic missionaries to Tahiti and Archbishop of Tahiti Paul Maze (d. 1976) a beloved and revered leader of the Catholic Church in Tahiti. The window was installed in May, 2014 and a group of 700 dignitaries and guests attended the dedication on May 8th , 2014. |
THE BLACK MADONNA - MARY STAR OF THE SEA, SAN PEDRO, CA
In 2015 Ancient Arts designed, fabricated and installed on October 1st a stained glass window with the image of the Black Madonna of Bistrica in a niche dedicated by the faithful and loyal Croatian parishioners of Mary Star of the Sea in San Pedro.
A statue of Madonna and child was charred, but survived when the Catholic Church in Bistrica, Croatia was burned during a Turkish invasion in the 16th century. The survival of the statue was deemed a miracle and the present day Baslica is a place of pilgrimage today. In 1998, Pope John Paul II's visit to beatify Croatian Cardinal Aloysius Stepanic took place before a crowd of 500,000.

EXQUISITE STAINED GLASS WINDOW RESTORED AT ST. AMBROSE
In April of 2015, Ancient Arts was
commissioned by the Archdiocese
of Los Angeles to restore a stained
glass window at St. Ambrose
Church in West Hollywood, CA. The
magnificent stained glass, circa 1950,
throughout the Church, including the
subject of this restoration were the
creation of the Harry Clarke Studios
of Dublin, Ireland. The Harry Clarke
artistic touch is on full display
with the vivid colors, the diapering
(decorating with a repeated
pattern) of the painted details and
particularly in the multicolored
glory of the angel's robe. The jacket of the young girl and the ship were plated (two
layers of glass) for added depth and detail. This stained glass panel was re-installed
in its proper place on August 8th, 2015. |

ST. MATTHIAS RESTORATION, HUNTINGTON PARK, CA
Ancient Arts was commissioned by the Construction Department of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to restore two
sections of a large stained glass window, approximately 6' x 5', that was vandalized at St. Matthias. The window is
a beautiful and traditional depiction
of Jesus as the Good Shepherd. It was
challenging to match the colors of the
damaged and broken glass as closely
as possible. This was achieved by
checking our stained glass distributor
in California and sending samples
to stained glass factories, Kokomo
in Indiana and Wissmach in West
Virginia.
